Earlier this year, a TRIMEDX Foundation volunteer team made up of Brandy Attaway (TRIMEDX), Javier Naranjo (TRIMEDX), Michael O'Brien (Retired – Kaiser Permanente), and Nehal Siddig (TRIMEDX) arrived at AIC-CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya in Kijabe, Kenya.
Opened in 1998, CURE Kenya was Africa’s first pediatric orthopedic teaching hospital. Health care workers have performed more than 53,000 life-changing reconstructive and orthopedic surgeries for children suffering from treatable disabilities like bowed legs, burn contractures, and clubfoot.
Because of the high demand of technical patient services, the hospital provided the volunteer team with a lengthy list of equipment and facilities requests. The biomed team’s greatest success was the restoration of a C-Arm system, a device critical to the hospital’s services which quickly provides images of orthopedic anatomy, by calibrating the IRIS camera. In addition to the C-Arm, the volunteer team calibrated and serviced the X-RAY equipment, serviced the anesthesia machine, and provided preventative maintenance for the ultrasound machines, and trained local biomedical technicians on equipment operation and troubleshooting.
The facilities team assessed the condition and storage of patient warming equipment and provided recommendations for inventory and storage management to enhance equipment readiness and safety. Overall, the team contributed 108 hours of volunteer service towards the TRIMEDX Foundation’s mission.
Nehal, a first-time TRIMEDX Foundation volunteer, shared how meaningful it was to work alongside such a passionate team and connect with communities around the world:
“[This] experience…reminded me how much impact is possible when people come together with purpose,” says Nehal.
Her philosophy to biomedical work resonates deep with our mission.
“Every device we work on or maintain is directly connected to a patient, who may be someone's father, mother, or sibling. Through the precision of these devices, healthcare providers can make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans, ultimately enabling patients to spend more time with their loved ones. Medical equipment is not just a tool; it is a means to improve lives,” says Nehal.
