Where in the world is the TRIMEDX Foundation: Uganda Q2 '25 trip highlight
While Dan, Jimmie, and Joshua were wrapping up their work in Sierra Leone, Steve Link (Cullman Electric), Jerry Maddox (Medxcel), Daniel Monarrez (TRIMEDX), and Eustace Ricks (TRIMEDX) arrived in East Africa, about 4,500 miles away, in Mbale, Uganda, to provide technical expertise and support to the staff at CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda.
CURE Uganda is one of Africa’s leading pediatric hospitals for brain surgery and the treatment of neurological conditions, providing approximately 1,900 surgical procedures annually for children with conditions including hydrocephalus, spina bifida, brain tumors, and other neural tube defects.Eustace and Daniel supported the hospital’s biomedical engineers. Together, they accomplished long-awaited repairs to vital medical equipment and provided hands-on training -- empowering the staff to complete equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in between volunteer visits. The biomed team repaired a malfunctioning CR reader, serviced the anesthesia machines, trained staff how to properly service the Quantum X-RAY room, and shared a CR reader service manual for detailing routine cleaning and maintenance best practices.
On the hospital and facilities side, Jerry and Steve assessed the hospital’s electrical systems, serviced the power generator, and trained staff on generator maintenance best practices. Hospital staff learned how to clean condenser fins, replace a blower motor drive, inspect consumable parts and maintain a stocked part inventory to ensure the generator remains in good working order. Finally, at the request of the hospital's Executive Director, the duo repaired the nurse intercom transmitters, restoring functionality to the essential communication system.
Together, the team collectively worked for 96 hours and successfully fulfilled all equipment maintenance and facility checks requested by the hospital staff, provided hands-on training to staff sharing knowledge and inspiring confidence, and detailed suggestions for the next TRIMEDX Foundation volunteer team to visit the hospital to best support the needs of the staff and the patients awaiting quality healthcare.
